Based on the trials for registration in the period (1998-2000), new spring barley varieties with a very good malting quality were registered as ANNABELL and SABEL in the year 2000. The ANNABELL variety has an excellent level of extract yield d.m., an optimum activity of protheolytic and cytolytic enzymes but a lower activity of the amylolytic ones. Wort content is optimal. It combines a high yield and a very good malting quality. The SABEL variety has also an excellent level of extract yield d.m., an optimum enzymatic activity and wort content. Its utility value rests in the combination of malting quality, powdery mildew resistance and medium lodging resistance.
